Ponder’s stretch of Denton County catches storms coming off the Wise County line, one of the most active severe-weather corridors in North Texas. The NWS confirmed an EF-0 tornado near Krum, a few minutes east, in May 2019, the same outbreak that put a twister on the north side of Saginaw. A spring 2024 hail system swept thousands of properties along this corridor from Roanoke through Justin and Ponder, and the May 28, 2024 windstorm drove damaging gusts across the county, blowing over an 18-wheeler on I-35 north of Denton.
NWS Fort Worth logs several hail-producing storms through this area in a typical spring. On ranch homes and metal outbuildings, hail dents and granule loss hide easily; on new builds, bruised mat shortens a roof’s life by a decade.
