Why Clay Homeowners Trust SWAT

Clay is one of the closest towns to our office on Alton Road in Irondale. City Hall on Old Springville Road is a little over eight miles away by I-59 North, which is usually a fifteen to twenty minute drive. We can often see your roof the same day you call. Before work starts, we check with the City of Clay about the permit your job needs and pull it for you.

Clay got its post office in 1878 and took its name from the red clay soil. It stayed an unincorporated community until it became a city on June 6, 2000. Half the homes here were built in 1994 or earlier, and about six in ten went up between 1970 and 1999. A roof from the early 1990s has been through more than thirty Alabama summers, so many of these houses are on their second roof or getting close to needing one.

On an older Clay roof we look for bare spots where the granules, the gritty coating on shingles, have worn away. We check the flashing, the metal that seals around chimneys and vents, and press on the decking, the wood under your shingles, to find soft areas from slow leaks. You’ll get dated photos and a straight answer about whether you need a repair, an insurance claim or no work for now. Call our Irondale office at (205) 623-2446 to pick a time.

We had an excellent experience with SWAT Roofing & Contracting. Jamie Marsh was our service associate, and he helped explain the entire process, making it very easy to work through with them and our insurance company. Their work is exceptional and quick. Jamie remained responsive through the whole process and I am confident with their fairness of their pricing. Highly recommend.

As someone who has never had their roof replaced, I was completely clueless about the process. Jamie Marsh took the time to thoroughly explain the process and was always available to assist with any questions or concerns along the way. As a bit of a special case, having recently changed insurance companies, I expected some push back from my previous insurer. From meeting with their adjuster, to working around my schedule to determine a replacement date, and being on site to ensure the integrity of not just my property but my neighbors as well, I can't thank Jamie and the SWAT roofing team enough for their guidance and professionalism throughout the process.

He fully explained how the while process would go and consistently stayed in contact and give us periodic updates all the way up until the day the job was done. The crew who did the work on the roof were very professional and helpful and ensured we were able to come and go safely while they worked. Thanks William for all your hard work!!

SWAT Roofing replaced my roof and gutters, painted the outside of the house and also did some minor repairs inside. They did a great job and my roof looks better than ever. Will Martin, the project manager, did a very good job in scheduling and communicating about all aspects of the project. I can definitely recommend SWAT Roofing.

Shout out to William Martin with SWAT Roofing for helping with the insurance claim, having to work with 2 different insurance adjusters to prove the damage for the roof replacement. William also made sure from beginning to end that the work was completed on time and to the standards that SWAT sets for their work ethics, thank you.

Clay Roofs Take a Beating from Alabama Weather

The storm most people in Clay remember came before dawn on January 23, 2012, when an EF-3 tornado with winds of 150 mph moved through Center Point and into Clay. Starting at 3:58 am, it cut a path 15.69 miles long that was about 600 yards wide where it crossed Clay. It crossed Old Springville Road and destroyed homes on Harness Circle in Northwoods and Plymouth Rock Drive in Legacy. More recently, on February 26, 2026, the National Weather Service confirmed hail up to 2 inches in parts of Jefferson, St. Clair and Blount counties, plus an EF-0 tornado in nearby Trussville and a microburst in nearby Pinson.

Damage from a storm like that isn’t always easy to spot from your driveway. Hail can leave bruises in shingles that shed their grit later, and strong wind can lift the flashing or crack the decking while the roof still looks fine from below. Photos taken soon after a storm make it much easier to show your insurance company what happened. We’ll inspect your roof for free, and we’ll tell you plainly when we don’t find anything.

Clay Roofing • FAQ

Most calls from Clay get a visit the same day, since the drive from our Irondale office up I-59 North takes about fifteen minutes. We work all over the city, including the 35215, 35126, 35173 and 35235 zip codes. After an overnight storm our crews head out at first light, and a roof with an open leak gets a tarp the same day to keep the rain out.

The City of Clay’s Building and Inspections office at City Hall handles permits. Each of the 30-plus cities in Jefferson County handles permits a little differently, so we check with Clay’s office about your address before the job starts and pull whatever permit your roof needs.

Age is only part of the answer, so we’d want to see the roof before telling you to replace it. A 1990s house may already have had one new roof, and a well-kept original can sometimes last a while longer. We look for curled or cracked shingles, soft decking and worn seals around the plumbing vents. Plenty of Clay homes from that era are ready for a new roof, but some only need repairs, and we’ll tell you which fits yours.

A roof put on after that storm is now more than a dozen years old, so a checkup makes sense even if nothing is leaking. Homes on Harness Circle, Plymouth Rock Drive and nearby streets have been through every storm since. We’ll see how the shingles are aging and whether the flashing is still sealed tight. Then we’ll tell you which repairs need attention now and which can safely wait.

It’s worth a look, since the storm was close. On February 26, 2026, the National Weather Service confirmed hail up to 2 inches in parts of Jefferson, St. Clair and Blount counties, an EF-0 tornado in Trussville and a microburst, a sudden blast of wind pushing down from a storm, in Pinson. Hail bruises are hard to see from the ground, so we’ll check your roof for free and give you dated photos of what we find.

Hail and wind damage is often covered, though your policy and deductible decide how much. We work with every major insurance company, and one SWAT project manager stays with you from your first call until the final payment. That person documents the damage, meets the adjuster at your house and handles the paperwork. Storm damage sometimes turns up under the old shingles once they come off. We send your insurer an update about it, called a supplement, so they can cover that work too.

The price depends on your roof, so we give it to you after a free inspection instead of guessing over the phone. The size, the pitch (how steep the roof is), the number of old shingle layers, the condition of the decking and the material you choose all change the number. Seeing it first keeps the quote accurate and helps avoid surprise change orders after tear-off. Insurance often pays for storm-damaged roofs minus your deductible, and our roof replacement cost guide lists typical prices by material.

We offer financing through our lending partners, GreenSky and GoodLeap, subject to credit approval. It helps most with a roof that has simply worn out, since insurance generally doesn’t pay for age. It can also cover the part of a storm job your claim doesn’t. Plans include $0 down, fixed rates and no penalty for paying the loan off early. Our financing page explains the options, and your project manager can go over them with you.

SWAT holds license #41811 from the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board, and we carry insurance for residential roofing work in the state. The shingle makers we use have certified our installers, and our Atlas Pro+ Diamond status ranks us in the top 2 percent of roofers in the U.S. Each roof we install comes with a 10-year workmanship warranty.
