The city’s Building, Engineering & Zoning Department handles them through its Inspections & Permits office on the 4th floor of City Hall. Applications go through the city’s online portal, Civic Access Plus. Jefferson County has more than 30 cities and each one does permits its own way, so we check whether your job needs one and pull it when it does.

Hollywood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. That kind of listing usually doesn’t limit what owners do to their own homes with their own money, and as far as we know Homewood doesn’t have a local board that reviews roof work. Rules can change, though, so give the city a quick call before you pick new materials. Many Hollywood homes are 1920s Spanish-style or Tudor houses, and the Spanish ones often have clay tile. We work on clay tile as well as shingles, and after the inspection we’ll tell you whether repairing the tile or replacing the roof makes more sense.

Homewood normally requires a city permit to cut down a tree, and it sets a minimum of 16 trees per acre. The city has said trees snapped in a storm can be cleared without one, but please check with the city before anyone starts cutting. While the tree is cleared, we can tarp the roof to keep rain out and then inspect the decking under it.

It’s worth a look, especially near Oak Grove Road, Wildwood Parkway and Samford, where the EF-1 passed. A loose shingle or a nail that has backed out can leak slowly for months before you see a ceiling stain. Our free inspection takes about an hour and you’ll get dated photos. Time limits for a claim depend on your policy, so ask your insurer about damage from that night.

Many policies cover sudden damage from wind, hail or a falling tree, minus your deductible. Damage that only shows up once the old shingles come off goes to your insurer as a supplement, which is an update to the claim.

Our inspector checks the size, the pitch (how steep the roof is), the decking, the material you want and the number of shingle layers, since two old layers take more work to tear off than one. Pricing it in person keeps the quote accurate and makes surprise change orders after tear-off much less likely.
