TPO roofing is one of the most popular and energy-efficient types of roofs to install on a commercial building. Its ability to handle high temperatures, heavy rains, and strong impacts from hail storms and the other types of severe weather experienced here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area makes it an ideal choice for commercial flat roofs.
S.W.A.T. Roofing & Contracting provides expert commercial roof installation and repair of TPO roofs. Our contractors are licensed and certified, with combined decades of experience working on roof repairs and replacement in Fort Worth, Dallas, and the surrounding areas. TPO Roofing Durability
Thermoplastic Polyolefin, or TPO, is a single-ply roofing membrane is a single layer of synthetic material that is installed on top of a flat roof. Single-ply membranes are a popular choice for commercial roofs because they are extremely durable, they are competitively priced and easy to install. Rubber, ethylene, propylene, and other types of filler materials are chemically bonded together to create a TPO Roofing membrane. While this synthetic material is closer to a rubber roof, in cost, it provides further durability and is more energy-efficient than its rubber counterparts.
TPO roofing material is very flexible, which makes it resistant to tearing, puncture marks, and impact damage you’ll often see from hailstorms. The flexibility of the membrane ensures consistent protection and performance, even when a building begins to settle.
Another benefit of choosing a TPO roof is that it is heat reflective. It is Energy Star rated and can endure damaging ultraviolet rays, along with ozone pollutions and chemical exposure. Single-ply roofing membranes have traditionally done well in a variety of climates, particularly in climates as we experience in North Texas. Their ability to handle long-term weathering and wear is unequaled.
A TPO roof is estimated to last between 10-20 years, although some manufacturers claim they can last 30 years or more. The TPO compounds have changed in recent years, so it is difficult to accurately predict their longevity.
TPO Roofing Problems
TPO Roofing is still a relatively new material. Manufacturers are still learning about the right ration of ingredients to make the most durable single-ply membrane. Formulas continue to change and evolve, which can sometimes cause builders to be uncertain of their exact longevity.
In the past, not all TPO membranes have been created using proven manufacturing techniques. Faulty chemical formulas have cause many TPO roofs to fall apart, or start leaking, in particular when exposed to high heat over a long period of time. Fortunately, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has implemented stricter standards that are being adopted by most manufacturers in the industry. When you look to purchase a TPO roof, buying from a trusted manufacturer means you are getting a high-quality material that has met certain performance guidelines and is more likely to last.
